Report supplied by Compleat Angler - Wallaroo
This weekend is the Long Weekend and with the School Holidays and the Paskeville Field days on at the moment (finishes Thursday 1/10/09) there will be plenty happening in the area. The weather forecast is looking good at the moment but we all know we can't rely on that. Today it is forecast for 20-30kt winds and I have just looked out at the Town Hall Flag it is flat against the pole, not a breath of wind and it has been like it all morning. With it being a Long Weekend please remember if you are going out in your boat, check all your safety gear before you leave home. I would say there will be Marine Safety Officers and Fisheries Officers around to make sure we are all doing the right thing. The new Fisheries Regulations Books are available now and there is also the new Fisheries Service available to all with mobile phones SMSFish 0427 767 995 just sms the fish name and they will reply almost instantly with the fish size, bag limit and any season closures. This is a good one to have in your phone.
POINT RILEY – Snapper have been caught from the rocks north of Point Riley with the best baits being Squid or Tommy fillets. Some nice size Squid have also been caught from the rocks with the Yakamito 3.5 Lumo Jag working well. Some nice King George Whiting have been taken from the beaches using Goolwa Cockles for bait. At the Point some nice Salmon and Snook have been taken on Pilchard under a float. Some of the guys have also hooked into a few using Spanyid Lures.
WALLAROO JETTY – Snapper continue to be caught from the Wallaroo Jetty. Most of them are around 45 – 80cm. The best spot to try is on the left hand side opposite the shed with the 3 roller doors casting back under the jetty. Best baits are Pilchards or Squid. A burley bomb lowered to the bottom work well. Plenty of Blue Swimmer Crabs are being caught. Carp has again proved to be the best bait. Small Tommies are biting during the day at the end of the jetty and larger size Tommies being caught after dusk with Gents being the best bait. Squid are patchy at the moment but the best times to try is dawn or dusk. Give the Yo-Zuri LE-24 2.5 jigs a try as these were working well. Some small Kingfish are also starting to appear.
WALLAROO MARINA – The Marina has Bream, Salmon Trout and the odd small Snapper being caught. Best baits to try are Prawns and White Bait. The best lure for Salmon in the marina has been a Storm Wild Eye Minnow Medium.
WALLAROO BOATS – When the boats have been able to get out the Illusions and Jurassic Park have had large Snapper with the Middle Bank holding smaller fish. King George Whiting have come from the Middle Ground and around the Mussel Farm. There have been plenty of Squid from around Point Riley with the Yakimito Jags proving the best.
MOONTA BAY JETTY – There have been some good catches of Squid early in the mornings. The wild weather of the last week slowed things down for a few days but yesterday there were reports of some good catches again. After dark there have been catching Tommies using Gents for bait. A 4 in 1 float with a starlite in it and size 8 hooks is the preferred rig. Some King George Whiting have also been caught using Goolwa Cockles for bait. Snook have been hanging around the jetty again. We have also had reports that the lights on the jetty are not working so remember a torch.(Unless they have been fixed).
PORT HUGHES JETTY – Tommies at night using Gents for bait and a starlite float rig. Squid have been caught early in the mornings and as the water clears we should see more being caught. There has been the odd Blue Swimmer Crab and the odd Salmon being caught from the jetty. Some Garfish have just started to show and when the weather warms up a bit we should see more. (The lights on this jetty also have not been working).
PORT HUGHES BOATS – When the boats have got out this week some good catches of King George Whiting, Squid and Blue Swimmer Crabs have come from Coopers. Some boat crews were lucky enough to bag out. At Cape Elizabeth crews have caught some big King George Whiting, small rugger Snapper and some nice Snook. There have been a few King George Whiting , the odd Garfish and some Squid. The Steamer Channel has the odd Snapper to 7kg. Bird Island has been good for Crabs.
BALGOWAN & THE GAP – There have been some bag limits of King George Whiting taken from this area but is one boat will get their limit and three will miss out. There have been a few King George Whiting and the odd Garfish from the beach and there are still a few Mullet being caught on worms.
BOTTOM END – Last weekend the Copper Coast Angling Club fished the Bottom End. They caught Salmon at Berry Bay, Tommies from the rocks at Corny Point and Salmon from Daly Heads. Some of the members stayed on at Point Turton and reported boat bag limits of King George Whiting coming in.
