Well as I mentioned I went out three times last week twice for an evening fish on the Cod using surface lures and also on Saturday morning. Fishing was promising on the first two nights just on dark with a couple of models reaching 55 cm but unfortunately many smaller ones chasing the lures. The best method using beatle type lures with a stop start motion. Great fun
Then on Saturday morning the winds on Lake Mulwala were from the Nit East blowing a gale so had to tow the boat around the south side. After 5 minutes on the road I forgot my battery which was on the charger so I went back and picked it up, then off again to the boat ramp 10 minutes out of town. Strapping off, everything ready except....the bungs...f&&&&. During the week I have removed them after the rain and left in Wodonga. So back into town to buy some bungs luckily the tackle shop was open early.
So off to the ramp, and finally had the boat in...blaming myself for the beers the night before watching 20 20 cricket. Usually I'm spot on but will admit a screw up when it happens.
Anyway I decided to head towards the bridge on the willows hearing the fish were in 2-3 feet of water early amongst the snags. I put on a bright coloured 5/8 oz spinner bait. Now usually I'm hitting the water with LCB's but changed due to a hint from a well know local. First cast into the willows right on the edge of the river bed. The boat was in 20 ft of water and casting into the shallow and letting the lure sink rapidly down the face of the river bed. Whack, the rod took a dive for 3 seconds or so and straight down...a good fish but spat it. NOT HAPPY. But at the same time excited. Not one take for 3 hours after that along the river edge and snags using a variety of methods and lures. Could not believe it. Probably would have been better using a bait like cheese.
So why nothing, I again fished that afternoon on Bardies as the wind took an easterly direction. Now usually I will get smaller fish - 3-4 of them but not a thing. This leaves me to the question of wind direction and how much influence on the fishing? |

I agree I usually find the East winds are a lot lighter. I have also found i do really poorly on an east wind. The only two times I have done any good was when it was a bit stronger.
Why are east wind so bad? I have been wondering this over the last month while we have been having so many of them. Could it be that it is due to some sort of pressure drop. Are there any meteorologists out there that can help us. |

Because they (generally) coincide with a falling barometer or and/low pressure systems. _________________ "If it is to be, it is up to me". |

Thanks for that observation. I suspected that but did not actually have any proof or records on it.

When you have a low stationed, high pressure system in Vic/SA then easts can sit there and run for days, just like Perth is getting now.
Still barometers suck. _________________ A wake free river for all. |
